Meet This Year’s Speakers
After a 20-year career as a visionary marketer at Procter & Gamble, Nokia, Heineken, and Absolut Vodka, where he created groundbreaking partnerships with everyone from Lady Gaga to the TED Conferences, Afdhel quit his corporate career when he found his purpose in tackling one of the biggest problems facing companies and people in the 21st century: how to find meaning in their work and unlock the power of business to do good in the world.
He is the founder and Chief Purpose Officer of Conspiracy of Love, a global brand purpose consultancy whose clients include iconic brands such as Adidas, Red Bull, and Oreo, and Fortune 500 companies like Microsoft, Mondelez, Diageo, AB InBev, and Facebook.
Afdhel is the co-author of Good Is the New Cool: Market Like You Give a Damn, the best-selling book about brand purpose, published by Regan Arts (a division of Phaidon) in 2016. Good Is the New Cool sparked a global movement, and has been turned into a podcast (in association with Soho House) and a series of conferences (in Los Angeles, Sydney, and Melbourne). A TV show based on it is currently in development, in association with CCI Entertainment and 1Community.
He is a writer at Forbes, where he covers the intersection of business and social impact. He is also the author of China Bay Blues (a book of poetry) and Strange Fruit (a novel), both nominated for literary awards in his native Sri Lanka. Afdhel is represented by Robert Guinsler at Sterling Lord Literistic.
An inspirational and powerful speaker, he has traveled the world and been a featured speaker at the Cannes Lions, SXSW, TEDx, Advertising Week, Columbia University, Conscious Capitalism, and more. He is represented by Nadia Laurinci at Laurinci Speakers, and Speakers' Spotlight in Canada.
Born in Sri Lanka, he is a graduate of King's College London and the London School of Economics. He is now based in Los Angeles, California, where he lives with his wife and son.
Matt Friedman is an expert in combating international human trafficking, with more than 30 years of experience in the field. He is CEO of The Mekong Club, an organization of Hong Kong’s leading businesses that have joined forces to help end all forms of modern slavery. Matt previously worked for USAID and the United Nations in more than 30 countries. He offers technical advice to numerous governments, banks, and corporations working to eliminate all forms of modern slavery, and is the author of 12 books. In 2017, Matt won Asia’s prestigious “Communicator of the Year” Gold Award.
Elaine Mitchel-Hill is an expert in responsible supply chains, sustainable procurement, labor rights, and more. In her role at Marshalls plc, she develops human rights strategy, including the organization’s response to its UK Modern Slavery Act requirements, and embeds this activity in Marshalls’ business operations. She is also an advocate of the United Nations Global Contract (UNGC), has participated in a number of All-Party Parliamentary Groups on modern slavery, and represents Marshalls at the International Labour Organization’s International Programme for the Elimination of Child Labour.
Gustavo Perez Berlanga leads the successful implementation of high-impact sustainability projects at TOKS, one of Mexico's leading restaurant chains. Under his leadership, he has eradicated poverty for thousands of people nationwide and his programs have attained the United Nations (UN)'s 16 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He formerly sat on the board of the UN Global Compact (UNGC) in New York and was the president of the network in Mexico. Among his achievements, he is the recipient of the Hong Kong Social Entrepreneurship Research Institute's Social Leadership Award, was named by the UNGC as an SDG Pioneer in 2017, and was selected by Real Leaders magazine as one of the 100 most influential leaders in sustainability.
At Intel’s Global Supply Chain organization, Dr. Adam Schafer is responsible for supply chain ESG and chemical compliance. He oversees Intel’s supply line sustainability, supplier code of conduct, human rights and labor policies, chemical regulations and policy, green material selections, responsible minerals, and supplier diversity and inclusion programs. Adam holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and philosophy from the State University of New York (Oswego), and a Master's and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Washington.
Travis is an international trade and compliance attorney who specializes in International Traffic in Arms Regulations, Export Administration Regulations, and sanctions; global anti-corruption and anti-slavery; codes of conduct; environmental health and safety; product stewardship; and corporate social responsibility. Travis manages Assent’s worldwide legal activities, advises the board of directors on legal matters, and oversees corporate compliance, governance initiatives, and other commercial transactions. Before coming to Assent, he served in various high-level counsel positions with companies such as Microchip Technology, Foresite Group, and St. Jude Medical (Abbott).
Senior Manager, Global Governance at the United Nations Global Compact
Christina Koulias serves as Senior Manager, Anti-Corruption and Global Governance at the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. As part of her portfolio, Christina leads the UNGC’s work on the 10th Principle on Anti-Corruption and Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes the recently-launched Action Platform for Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
